Bernoria is a private messenger with live translation. You write, speak, or make calls in your language — the other person understands in theirs. Chat, voice photo, karaoke video, 1:1 video calls, and group calls are all included. 17 languages, Made in Germany.
The basics
For a video call: no. Simply send the other person a guest link. They open it in their browser, enter their name, and join — no account, no app, no phone number. The next question explains how it works.
For everything else — chat, voice messages, voice photo, video messages — you both need an account. You send an invitation link, and the other person is set up in two minutes. From then on, everyone writes and speaks in their own language.
Yes — with a guest link for a video call. The other person doesn’t need an account, an app, or a phone number. A browser on their phone or laptop is enough.
Here’s how:
1. Open „New Contact“ in the messenger and select „Invite Guest to Video Call“.
2. Send the link, for example via WhatsApp or email.
3. Your guest opens the link, enters their name, chooses their language, and taps „Join“.
4. It rings for you. You answer — and you can talk to each other.
With live translation, you read the subtitles in your language, and your guest in theirs.
Everything is free for your guest. You can create guest links with every plan, including Free.
Without translation, the call costs nothing. With live translation, you pay for both directions: one minute of conversation costs you 2 live minutes — yours and your guest’s. If you don’t have any live minutes, the call continues without translation.
A guest link is valid for 24 hours and for one person. When they join for the first time, it is linked to your guest’s browser. They can use it again there within the 24 hours. For someone else, simply create a new link.
No. Bernoria runs directly in your browser — on your phone, tablet, and laptop. But you can add Bernoria to your home screen, then it works like an installed app (including push notifications). You can find out how in the Tech section.
Yes. You need a phone number to set up your account — we'll send you a confirmation code by SMS. If SMS messages don't reach you (e.g. in Russia), we'll use your email instead. The number is used to secure your account, not for advertising.
Currently 17 languages: German, English, Russian, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Ukrainian, Hungarian, Turkish, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and Thai. More are being added gradually — if your language is missing, let us know through the contact page.
It’s easy: Click "Get started for free" in the top right corner of this page — and you’re straight in. No download, no app store, no waitlist. The messenger runs in your browser, the same on your phone, tablet, and laptop. The first time you start, you’ll set up an account in two minutes (see next question). If you want to use Bernoria like an app long-term, you can add it to your home screen with one click — you can find out how in the Tech section.
Four small steps, all together not even two minutes:
1. Phone number — so your account is unique and friends can find you.
2. Email address — as a second way to reach you in case SMS messages don’t come through (e.g. in Russia).
3. Password — it protects your private chats like the combination to a safe. More on that in "What’s the password for in the messenger?" further down. Remember it well or write it down somewhere safe.
4. Confirmation code — we’ll send you a six-digit code by SMS, you enter it, done.
After that, you’re in. No credit card, no email confirmation odyssey, no hidden catches. To try it out, you get all translation features free for 2 days, plus 10 minutes of live translation in video calls — no strings attached.
Plans and pricing
Live translation costs us real money — every translated message, every minute of a video call runs through translation services that we pay for per use. That’s why there’s a subscription, but no ads, no data sales, and no investors. Free is free forever and covers the most important features. Anyone who wants unlimited or live translation pays — so Bernoria stays independent.
Plus (12,00 €/month) translates everything that doesn’t need to happen live: text messages, voice messages, voice photos, video messages — unlimited and in 17 languages.
Premium (23,00 €/month) includes all of that and adds 240 minutes of live translation in video calls: 1:1 and in groups, with subtitles in each participant’s language.
If you mostly write, Plus is enough. If you make calls and want to understand each other, go with Premium. You can buy additional minutes with either plan.
240 minutes per month, for 1:1 and group calls combined. The allowance resets when the month changes.
Everyone uses their own allowance: if you both have Premium, a 30-minute call costs each of you 30 minutes.
If the person you’re talking to doesn’t have any minutes, you can share yours with them — then they’ll see subtitles too, and the entire call comes out of your allowance. In that case, one minute of calling uses two of your minutes.
If that’s not enough, buy extra minutes without changing plans. Purchased minutes don’t expire.
Yes, in two ways. Free access is permanent and has no time limit. Plus, after signing up, you can test all translation features for 2 days — unlimited text, voice messages, and video messages, plus 10 minutes of live translation in video calls. No credit card, no automatic renewal.
Your account stays active and you can keep using the free features without limits. Translation turns off until you subscribe to Plus or Premium. Nothing is charged automatically.
In your account area, one click. Your plan keeps running until the end of the month you’ve already paid for, then you’re automatically switched back to the Free plan. No deadlines, no fine print, no need to email support.
No. The monthly price is all you pay. Translation for text, voice messages, and video messages is uncapped.
Only live translation in video calls has an allowance, because it costs us real money for every minute. Once it’s used up, you can buy additional minutes — individually and only if you want to. Nothing is ever charged automatically.
Payments are handled through Stripe — common payment methods including SEPA, credit card, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. You’ll see exactly what’s available in your country at checkout. Billing is monthly.
Live translation in detail
Good enough for everyday conversations: family, friends, travel, plans. Subtitles appear within a few seconds of what’s spoken. The quality is comparable to major translation services, but live — instead of afterward. For legal or medical specialist conversations, we still recommend a human interpreter.
Up to 4 participants — family, close friends, small groups. That fits the idea behind Bernoria: real, personal conversations, not conference meetings.
Not in your own voice. The person you’re talking to hears your voice message exactly as you recorded it — in your real voice. They also see what you said as text: in your language and translated into theirs. They can also have the translation read aloud by an AI voice.
A voice photo combines an image with spoken text.
You take a photo — of yourself, something, a situation — and record some speech with it. The person you’re talking to then sees the photo and hears your voice while the text appears in sync (like karaoke) — in their language, word by word with what’s spoken. This way, the image arrives together with your voice and the live translation, instead of just as a photo with a caption.
A video message is simply a short video you record and send. A karaoke video is the same thing — but with synchronized translation: your spoken words appear as subtitles, word by word in the rhythm of your speech. The person you’re talking to can read along in their language while you speak. Especially useful when audio is loud or quiet — or when the recipient wants to watch something more than once.
Yes. In group video calls, you see live subtitles directly on each speaker’s video — always in your own language. If someone speaks Russian, you read along in English; if someone speaks Turkish, same thing. Up to four participants, each in their own language.
Requirement: you need live minutes — either from Premium or from a purchased package. The other participants can be on any plan.
Yes. When you select a video from your gallery, you can enable the „Create subtitles" toggle in the preview dialog. We then analyze the video’s audio track and overlay the translation onto the image in karaoke style — word by word, in your recipient’s language. Depending on the video length, creation takes a few seconds to a few minutes. Note: The toggle isn’t available in end-to-end encrypted chats.
After a translated video call, you can choose to receive a summary of the call by email.
Why it helps: During a live call, you keep looking at the subtitles. It’s easy to miss something — a time, a name, a request. The summary lets you calmly review afterward what you talked about, what you agreed on, and what the mood was like. Personal things like „I missed you" are included too — that’s content, not just a phrase.
- Before a video call starts, we’ll ask whether you want a summary. If it’s a one-on-one call, check „Summarize call" before answering. For a group call, we’ll ask when you start or join.
- During the call, we keep track of the recognized sentences from all participants.
- After you hang up, we create the summary and send it to your email address in your language. In a group call, it covers the time from when you joined until you hang up — even if the others keep talking afterward.
Yes. Everyone else on the call sees an icon next to your name. Tapping it explains that you’re having a summary created.
The email contains only the summary, not a transcript. The transcript is kept only temporarily on our server in Germany and is deleted as soon as no one on the call who requested a summary is still there, and no later than after 24 hours.
If you change your mind during the call: what has been said up to that point will still be summarized when you hang up. For a call without a summary, start a new call or join again and select „No".
Privacy and security
That depends on your plan — and you can change it yourself in every chat.
Free: Your chats are end-to-end encrypted by default. No one except you and the other person can read them, not even us.
Plus and Premium: Translation is on by default here. To translate, the text has to pass through our servers. That’s why the message is not end-to-end encrypted then, but it is still encrypted in transit (transport encryption). If you want end-to-end encryption, turn it on in the chat. Translation is then off in that chat.
The same applies to voice messages, videos, and calls: translation and subtitles are only available when the chat is not end-to-end encrypted.
Your messages are stored on our server in Germany so you can see your history on all devices. Encrypted messages are only stored there in encrypted form. We don’t sell content.
No. We’re funded through our subscriptions, not through advertising or selling data. Your messages, calls, and contact lists are neither analyzed nor shared with third parties.
Our servers are located in Germany and the EU. Our development and operations team is based in Germany, and we comply with the GDPR.
Yes. You’ll find the deletion feature in your account area. Chats, contacts, and your profile are deleted immediately and completely — no waiting period, no trash folder, no loopholes. The only exception: We’re legally required to keep billing and payment data for ten years (under commercial and tax law) before it’s automatically deleted. That’s not a choice, it’s the law — and it applies to every German company. If you have questions, support can help.
For text translations, we work with translation models from different providers. For live video subtitles, we use specialized real-time translation. All providers have been reviewed for data protection compliance, and content is processed only for translation — not stored, not used for training purposes.
Think of your Bernoria account as a personal safe: Your chats are securely stored inside, and only you have the combination. That combination is your password. It protects your messages from everyone else — including us.
We don't know your password, and we can't reset it for you. That's not a flaw, it's intentional: If we could open the safe, someone else could too in an emergency. You mainly need the password when setting up Bernoria on a new phone or tablet — it unlocks your old chats. Remember it well or write it down somewhere safe.
Honestly: your old, protected chats will be gone — permanently. But your account itself will remain: you simply set a new password, create a new safe, and can keep messaging and calling all your contacts as usual. Only the old safe can no longer be opened, because nobody has the combination — not even us. That's not technical sloppiness, it's the price of real privacy: If we could restore the old chats, someone else could too in an emergency. That's why we strongly recommend: Save your password in a password manager now. It's the easiest and safest way to make sure this never happens to you.
The web login with email and password is deliberately separate from the messenger password — because they're for two completely different things. In the customer portal, you can view invoices, payment details, and manage your subscription. You can reset this password by email anytime if you forget it. Your messenger password, on the other hand, protects your private chats — and that's exactly why nobody (including us) can reset it. Two doors, two keys: one for paperwork, one for private stuff.
Tech
Modern browsers in their current version: Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. On your phone as well as your laptop. On iPhone and iPad, please use Safari or Chrome — that’s where Bernoria works best, including push notifications.
Yes — Bernoria is a web app that can behave like a real app.
iPhone / iPad (Safari): Share button at the bottom → "Add to Home Screen".
Android (Chrome): Menu → "Install app" or "Add to Home screen".
From then on, Bernoria sits on your home screen as an icon, with push notifications just like any other app.
Through the contact page. If it’s about a bug, briefly describe it and tell us your device and browser — then we can help faster. Priority support is included with Plus and Premium.
Regular cellular data is enough for chat, voice photos, and karaoke videos. For live video calls, we recommend Wi-Fi or 4G — video quality adjusts automatically, but stable translation needs a stable connection. With a weak connection, subtitles may arrive with a short delay.
